BMW Tune-Up vs. BMW Oil Change, Know the Difference
BMW Tune-Up and BMW Oil Change
You’ve heard this since you sat down in your first car, a BMW tune-up and a BMW oil change will prevent costly repairs in the future. But, that isn’t the only perk – high-performance cars run like new when taken care of properly, making any aftermarket upgrades you’ve done to your BMW that much better.
Keeping up with your BMW’s maintenance schedule and service plans with a proper record of both will add value to your car as well. Whether you use your BMW as a cruiser or a race car, sticking to your schedule will ensure a long and healthy life for your precious vehicle.
So, what’s the difference between a tune-up and an oil change?
It can be confusing, as these terms tend to be used interchangeably, but they are different. There are minor and major tune-ups that can be performed on each BMW series and it will vary depending on mileage and driving habits.
- Electrical: spark plugs only. As a certified BMW mechanic, North Bay Bavarian will check your timing and make sure air and fuel filters are intact and clear, and that the distributer cap, rotor, and plug wires are in working condition.
- Electrical: the replacement of all spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributer caps, rotors, points and condensers, timing testing, voltage checks, a battery check and electrical sensor/switching valve assessment.
Tune ups are the general replacement and inspection of your BMW’s electrical, fuel and air systems in which small changes are made to make the engine and BMW as a whole run at its highest potential.
BMW Oil Change
The confusing part? Sometimes an oil change can be a package deal with a tune up, but it depends on the timing and mileage. An oil change, of course, is just the process of removing old and dirty oil from your BMW and replacing it with fresh, clean oil, where the oil filter is replaced and the chassis is lubricated.
Regular oil changes are crucial to high-performance vehicles like BMWs as clean oil and a new oil filter will keep dirt, rust and other unwanted particles out of the engine’s system. Choices can be made between “regular” oil and “synthetic” oil depending on the general use of your car, thinner oils for winter and thicker oils for summer are also available.
As BMW specialists, our team will help you make decisions based on the make and model of your car, mileage and planned usage, as well as refer to your maintenance schedule to keep up with factory warranty conditions and suggestions.
During a regular oil change and tune up we will be able to identify any other problems your BMW may have while we’re under your hood, so sticking to your service schedule is a definite must.
